On a very sunny Thursday afternoon, the minor girls and the junior girls competed in the Warwickshire Combined Events Championships. Both age groups had 40+ entries which meant that the competition was very fierce.
The minor girls team, consisting of Sarah Costa, Niamh Purnell and Ellie Cumberbatch had to contest 4 events (80m, Long jump, Shot putt and 600m). The day started with some very fast and competitive heats in the 80m which saw Ellie Cumberbatch steal a lead on the other 2 Southam girls with a time of 11.8. The second event saw the girls take on the long jump, this was a strong event for all three girls seeing Sarah gain a jump of 3.61m and Niamh and Ellie close behind on 3.30m and 3.28m respectively. The third event saw the girls attempt the shot putt one of the first time all 3 girls had competed in the discipline. After a few no throws the girls were all able to throw good distances to see them placed in the second group for the 600m. The 600m was hard after such a hot day but all three girls battled around the course and with a flying sprint finish Sarah Costa was able to win the second heat in a time of 2.04mins.
The junior girls had to tackle hurdles, shot putt, long jump, high jump and the 800m. The Southam team consisting of Larissa Hurt, Georgina Hurt and Alice Parsons began the day with the hurdles; not a particularly easy event which left the girls sat in the middle of the pack. The girls continued this success in the shot where Alice managed to throw 6.03m the best of the girls. The long jump saw all girls jump over 3.3om with Larissa coming out on top with 3.59m. Some excellent high jumping from Georgina Hurt meant that she sat 23rd before the 800m. The 800m was seeded seeing Larissa and Alice taking part in the first heat with both girls having strong races finishing in 2nd and 4th respectively. Georgina was in the second race and had a fantastic run to take the second heat and finish 3rd overall in the 800m. The girls 800m points meant that they gain valuable points at the end of the day seeing them finish on a high.
