Campion School, Northampton 40 – Southam College 15
We arrived to play Campion School, a weakened team without Captain and fly-half Tom Hill, due to injury. We knew it would be a tough match as this was the second time we had played Campion, losing at home earlier in the season. Mr Elkerton changed the starting positions with James Phillips playing fly-half and Charlie Knight as inside centre.
We started the first half with the slope but soon found ourselves two tries down to Campion by some of their players doing some strong direct running. We defended and tackled as well as we could but we didn’t gain much possession to run the ball back through our back line. We tried to play in the right areas by some good touchline kicking to move their large forwards around the pitch. However, we struggled to retain the ball in the forwards and we gave away another try. Towards the end of the first half the backs managed to get the ball down the line to Joe Washbrooke who ran in the corner for a try. The half time score was 15-5.
At the start of the second half the forwards started to ruck and maul better and from a scrum James Phillips got the ball and ran, beating the defenders and from this Joe Cummings went out for a try (score 20-10). Straight from the re-start Charlie Knight collected the kick-off and ran hard and fast, nobody could stop him and he scored a try (score 20-15). We were now in the match. Unfortunately the size and strength of Campion came through and they ran in several tries, but we never gave up. The final score was 40-15 to Campion.
We need to make sure we retain possession and do more direct running to tie up the opposition and then get quick ball. Against bigger teams we need to make sure we play our rugby in the right areas of the pitch.
Well done lads!
A great effort – weakened side by one but so proud of this bunch of lads. Hit low and hard and you will get the benefit.Mr Elkerton
