On Thursday evening the Year 11 Football team hosted St Benedict’s in the Quarter Final of the District Cup. The team started brightly and played some good football, whilst trying to adapt to a new formation. Ollie broke play up and allowed Harley, Zack, Charlie, Jon-Luc and Joe to all get on the front foot and try to find Lennon up front. The first goal came in the 14th minute with good football played out from the back, before a square ball across the box for Jon Luc to drive into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Unfortunately, a lapse of concentration allowed St Benedict’s to equalise with a well placed shot into the bottom corner. The weather conditions didn’t help the flow of the game with the wind swirling and making longer passes hard the Southam team battled well and kept the score at 1-1 until half time.
A couple of changes at half time encouraged Southam to keep possession and use the wind in their favour. The team continued to play good football, often finding the hard-working Zack and Harley who were looking to give Sam and Lennon as many chances as possible. The defence and goalkeeper had very little to do and were good at generating attacks by giving the midfield the ball. Southam created a number of opportunities but were not clinical in the final third until 5 minutes from the end. A good pass into Lennon allowed him to turn and fire into the net from 6 yards to give Southam a 2-1 lead. This goal gave Southam confidence and they started to create more flowing attacks. A great tackle from Zack allowed a through ball to Lennon who emphatically finished into the top corner to give Southam a 3-1 lead with minutes left.
A good performance from the team, with some excellent passing and attacking football. Well done on getting into the Semi Finals.
Man of the Match: Harley for being a constant threat going forward and working tirelessly in transition to get the ball back.
